The Cricut is out of the box

My niece, bless her heart stood in line at midnight on Thanksgiving to purchase a Cricut cutter for me at a greatly reduced price.  She has one herself and had given me a couple of quick lessons on her's before I decided to purchase one for myself.  It has since sat in its box, unopened, since Thanksgiving.  A reference back to my post a few days ago will tell you that I'm a great planner of craft projects but bring them to the table is quite another story.  I was tasked with decorating a box for goodie supplies for our church trip to New Orleans.  Last night I pulled the Cricut out and got started.  I have to say that the box came out nice for my first attempt, unfortunately I forgot to take any pictures before it was delivered to church this morning.

I did some practice tries on our everyday glasses.  I used several different size fonts and some came out better than others.  I had one where the etching cream bled under the vinyl and a couple of them I got the T on crooked, it isn't easy to get everything in line and correct on a non-flat surface.

I also tried a larger letter on a bottle that I use to store salad dressings.  As you can see the etching cream was not placed on the glass consistently and the results were an inconsistency on the bottle.

Today I am etching four wine glasses to be included in a gift basket with some of our local wines.  This small token of appreciate will go to a family who will host a dinner for all of us who will be working on the 2011 Habitat for Humanity project in New Orleans at the end of the month.

If any of you have some expertise with the Cricut I would love to hear from you, as you can see from my practice tries I can use any helpful hints you might have.

With some poetic license as to whether this is truly a metamorphosis or not I'm joining Susan at Between Naps on the Porch.

My husband wants to etch some of his glasses for his man cave but has not found an etching cream that works well. What kind did you use because yours look awesome!

Kath: I used Armour Etch, I purchased it at Hobby Lobby for $8.50 for a 3oz. bottle. This bottle goes a looooong way so don't let the price throw you off. HL does carry a couple of other brands but I've used Armour Etch before with pretty good success.

Looks like you did a great job and will only get better. I've decided to just shop in Etsy for things that are already done instead of creating myself. Someone has to do the buying...lol....

Char, I have never heard of this! I am super impressed with what you have done. It looks hard to me but yours turned out so nicely.
Please keep that camera handy and don't forget to take more pictures of your future projects.

You are good!
