10 Minute Project

OK, to get 10 minutes on this project you can't count the painting time.  Since most of us have scraps of wood around to be re purposed at some time or another I didn't count painting the wood into the project.  I saw this earlier this summer in a craft shop and put it in the back of my craft mind for further consideration.

Here is the finished project with what pitiful flowers I have blooming right now.  I hung my flower holder on a door that sits on our porch.  I really don't have the best place to put one of these, I could see it on an old swinging gate or a back fence outside.  On the inside it could hang on a wall or a door or wherever.

I started with a simple 24" piece of base molding that I had left over from installing new baseboards in our living room.  I painted it with a couple of coats of spray paint (time not included in 10 minutes).

I went to Lowes and bought these ring thingies in the plumbing/heating department.  They come in several sizes depending on what kind of jars you are going to use.  I got three for the 24" board that I was using for the project.

Next I measured equal distances for each of the rings and screwed them into the wood.  If I were to do it again I would use an awl to make indents in the metal before I tried to put the screw in.  As you can see by mine the screws aren't even because the drill made the screw jump around the metal a little before it caught.

I used mason jars but you could use any kind.  If I make another one I think I might use something like a mayo jar that is smooth and then put vinyl numbers on the front of each with a great font of some sort.  You just get the ring things started by screwing down the side screw and it will eventually tighten around the rim of the jar.  This is what it looked like after all three jars had been secured.

I put two picture hangers on the back and then centered two screws into the door to hang the board from.  Depending on how big you make yours you might need to beef up the hardware on the back.

I put a couple of inches of water in the bottom of each jar and then added what little bit of greenery and flowers I have left.  This will look great in a month or so when the mums are in bloom.
